Port of Valencia. Your best option.

Welcome back to your favourite business blog, today we will talk about one of the most important national ports here in Spain and which is ranked 30th in the world's ports, the port of Valencia.Has excellent road and rail connections to the centre of Spain. It closed the year 2019 having accommodated 5.4 million containers. However, it currently has a capacity to store 10 million TEU's and has state of the art resources for the tourist cruise traffic.

In addition, the authority of the port of Valencia is made up of the port of Sagunto and Gandía as well. It is characterised by a cohesive port community.

As far as infrastructure and facilities are concerned, we can appreciate the number of quays that exist for the storage and deposit of containers, specifically 14 quays. The map on the right shows the official and service buildings in red, the passenger terminals in green and the commercial terminals and facilities in blue. As can be deduced, this is a first class port, thanks to its large storage capacity, its extensive network of infrastructures and the large number of services it offers. If you are looking for a Spanish port to operate through, this is your ideal destination. Work on the northern extension of the port has been underway since 2011. This is intended for inter-oceanic container traffic.

If you are still not convinced about choosing Valencia harbour as your reliable port, don't worry, when you see the services it offers you will surely change your mind.

Now we are going to present some statistics about this wonderful port that will leave you amazed. We have based them on the data from October 2020, as they are the most up-to-date.

As we can see in the first image, the Port Authority of Valencia has handled a total of 65976613 tonnes of goods, 5639 vessels, 4437483 TEU's, 372221 passengers and 418715 vehicles in the month of October. There has been a notable decrease with respect to the same dates in the previous year due to the current situation. On the other hand, we can see that the port of Valencia has handled a large part of the goods and passengers, and therefore one can sense the importance of this port.

Through these graphics, we can deduce that at this point in the year, there is not the same accumulated traffic of goods with respect to last year. As we can see, until March there was practically the same traffic as last year. Once the pandemic was declared, the traffic of goods and containers was not on par with the previous year. We hope that next year there will be much more traffic, as this port has the infrastructure and the logistics to support much more.

We will now proceed to comment on a series of news items that we have found interesting.

The “ECO Valencia” arrives to valencia.

The Italian Shipping Registry (RINA) has awarded Eco Valencia the “Green Plus” class, the highest level. RINA certification in the field of environmental sustainability. Green Plus  recognises the design solutions, on-board systems and operating procedures implemented, both during the construction phase and during the operational phase. The aim is to improve environmental performance beyond the minimum levels required by international standards.

Eco Valencia is the first of the 12 ships of the GG5G class that the Grimaldi Group has ordered from the Chinese shipyard Jinling. It is 238 metres long and 34 metres wide, has a gross tonnage of 67,311 tonnes and a cruising speed of 20.8 knots. Of the 12 units, nine will be deployed in the Mediterranean Sea and another three will be operated by the Finnlines company of the Grimaldi Group in Northern Europe.

The greenest ship

The design of the GG5G class was conceived by the Technical and Energy Saving Department of the Grimaldi Group in collaboration with the Danish ship design studio Knud E. Hansen. Highly innovative elements, already partially patented and protected by copyright, have been incorporated: the air lubrication system, which gives the ship the prestigious “AIR-LUB” notation certified by RINA; the Rolls-Royce propulsion system optimised with innovative propellers; the integrated propulsion system between rudder and propeller (Promas Lite); the waste heat recovery, and the application of silicone paints on the hull.

The new GG5G class vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art electronically controlled engines and use fossil fuels in navigation and electricity while parked in port, guaranteeing “Zero Emission in Port®”. During the stop at the quay, the energy needs of the activities on board can be met thanks to the electricity stored by lithium batteries that are recharged during navigation thanks to shaft generators and 600 square metres of solar panels. On board the GG5G ships, exhaust gas purification systems are also installed to reduce sulphur and particle emissions.

The port of Valencia exceeds half a million containers in a single month for the first time.

503,482 TEUs. This is the number of containers that were loaded and unloaded at the terminals of the port of Valencia during the past month of August.

This is the first time that the half million containers have been exceeded in one month, a quantity that, as well as setting the historical record for monthly movements, reaffirms the recovery trend observed in the months of June and July last.

Until August 2020, the two best months in the history of the statistics of the port of Valencia were July 2019, when 494,262 TEUs were handled, and May 2019 (490,587).

The port of Valencia, leader in the Spanish port system

The August record consolidates the leading position of the port of Valencia in import/export operations of the Spanish port system, at a time marked by the health and economic crisis generated by the Coronavirus pandemic. This is a positive sign of the recovery of the economy and of world commercial traffic which has in the maritime service its main route in the generation of wealth and in the competitiveness of industrial activity.

In this sense, it is worth noting that last month also saw an increase in the number of ships working in the facilities of the port of Valencia, from 666 in August 2019 to 752 last August (also calculated in gross registered tons, or GT - 24,677,530 - the increase was 7.38%).

In this increase in commercial activity, the growth in full containers, 11.52%, stands out, especially the TEUs dedicated to exports, which recorded a positive performance of 18.18% in this month of August compared to the same month in 2019. This figure reflects the activation of the production of goods and products of Spanish industry and its sales abroad.

With regard to import containers, these fell by 1.36% while those dedicated to transit increased by 12.7%. In addition, there was a 5.92% drop in empty containers during August. This is a month in which the port of Valencia has exceeded 7.2 million tonnes of goods, 2.45% more than in August last year, thus achieving a double positive traffic evolution indicator: in containers and in tonnes.

Furthermore, this milestone in container movement has its continuity with the growth of 12.94% in total containerised goods, which reached 5.8 million tonnes and contrasts with the 45% drop in bulk goods. This month of August also saw a decrease of 6.94% in ro-ro traffic, a much more moderate figure than in previous months.

The port of Valencia exhibits in Shanghai its connectivity with the Far East

The port of Valencia manages 44% of the container traffic between China and Spain. The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) is exhibiting at the China International Import Export (CIIE) event its extensive connectivity with the Far East and the competitiveness of its infrastructures and services that position it as a strategic hub in the Mediterranean for maritime traffic between Europe and Asia.

At this event, the APV has a stand managed by Chinese commercial agents and a personalised virtual service from Valencia with the prescribers for the exchange of information on the services and opportunities for Chinese and Asian companies offered by the Mediterranean port.

With this double attention to the Asian market - the CIIE is one of the first world trade fairs in the logistics sector - the port of Valencia ensures the continuity and the updating of contacts in a determining forum for world trade coming from the Asian basin.

In spite of the Covid-19, the port of Valencia could not fail the CIIE. In fact the health and economic crisis resulting from the pandemic has not prevented the commercial team of the APV from continuing to work with the objective of reinforcing their leadership in the Asian markets. A position which facilitates access to the main ports of the Asian market as, via the port of Valencia, it has commercial connections with 84 Chinese ports.

The port of Valencia manages 44% of the containers from and to China in the whole Spanish port system. Amongst these containers, 46% are full containers (imports) whilst 32% of TEUs using Spain as a hub to redistribute containers in transit from China pass through Valencia.

Valencia is the main port for mobilising goods from China to North Africa

Valencia is a port which also plays a major role in moving goods from China to North Africa. In fact, this type of movement represents up to 70% of the goods unloaded in transit. On the other hand, 50% of the traffic loaded in transit to China comes from Canada and Brazil.

The Valencia enclave is the fourth largest European port and the 21st largest in the world in terms of connectivity, according to data from UNCTAD, the United Nations Organisation for Economic Development, and the main Spanish port in terms of container traffic. From its central position in the Mediterranean, it serves a hinterland that includes - in addition to the Region of Valencia - Madrid, Murcia, Andalusia and Aragon, amongst other regions. All this makes the port of Valencia a fundamental logistical point for access to Spain and Europe for the Chinese community and the cities related to the Silk Route.

United Nations highlights Valenciaport’s role in managing logistics activity to deal with COVID-19

During this pandemic, ports have played a key role in tackling this crisis that is plaguing us, as they have helped us to ensure that essential items, such as food or medical supplies, reach our homes. This is pointed out by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in its latest report, which highlights the work of the port community during the pandemic.

It highlights the great fluidity in the use of digital resources and the real-time information provided. It also highlights the great work in implementing a security measures protocol. With regard to the economic measures, it is worth highlighting the 10 million euros provided by the Valencia Port Authority to suppliers and service providers.

Valenciaport moves away from the crisis and sets a new historical record: 508,177 containers in October

In this month, the half million containers managed were exceeded for the second time (in August 503,482 TEUs were reached).

This is the third consecutive month with significant growth in the movement of goods, which shows that Valenciaport is moving away from the crisis (between August and October almost one and a half million containers passed through the terminals of Valenciaport).

The growing competitiveness and connectivity of Valenciaport explains the concentration of cargoes and the arrival of increasingly larger ships: although this October 103 fewer ships passed through Valencia than in the same month last year, the tons managed increased by 11.23% and containers by 7.73%.

By country, the USA and China continue to be Valenciaport’s main partners with increasingly gentle decreases (-2.53% and -7.35% respectively) in the management of full containers. The most dynamic destinations are the United Kingdom (+47.84), Canada (+45.81), Saudi Arabia (+26.20) and India (+18.39%).

In summary, and as a personal opinion, the port of Valencia is the best port to operate in Spain, as it has very good infrastructures when it comes to communicating with the rest of the world. On a national level, it has railway networks that help to distribute the goods that arrive at the port. On the other hand, Manises airport is very close. At an international level, it is a link between Asian countries and the Mediterranean. On the other hand, it is recognised that the port of Valencia is a leader in terms of communications, as it has a large internal network that helps to ensure that communications are fluid. In a few years we will see the increase in goods traffic when the northern extension of the port is completed, which will help it to rise in the ranking of the most important ports in the world. How not to choose the port of Valencia? I’ll choose it.
