"Geographical location and maritime connectivity" are the keys to betting on the port of Valencia for reefer traffic, argues Mar Chao, commercial director of the Valencia Port Authority. According to the INE, 60% of all import-export in Spain is located within a 300km radius of Valencia.

Moreover, the company MSC has a train service to reefer traffic that can join Valencia with Zaragoza three times a week, and the intention is to increase it. In addition, the Swiss company has launched a direct Pecem (Brazil) line with Valencia, with an optimal transit time, which will be "a great opportunity for Valencian exporters" indicates Mar Chao.

WHAT DO THE STATISTICS SHOW US?

As we already know, the Port Authority of Valencia is divided into three different ports, Gandía, Sagunto and finally Valencia. In this section we will analyze both the statistics of the flow of goods, as well as the traffic of ships from different ports

Port Authority of Valencia

By means of the previous table we can analyze the total flow that the PAV has had, including the total activity of the ports that it includes, which we will analyze later. It should be noted that although last year's total traffic was 3.58% higher than this year's 2020, the figures have not been as unfortunate as they seem because of the global pandemic.

The previous figures were in relation to the traffic of goods, however if we go to the traffic of tourist ships we find a large drop, specifically 61.31% because of the covid-19.

Next we will focus on the statistics of the port of Valencia, where we will find specifications on the traffic of both ships and containers, in addition we will also see the different main sectors that make up the activity of the port of Valencia and the tendency of these to be imported or exported.

Valencia Port

As can be expected, the port of Valencia is the most important of the three ports that make up the Port Authority of Valencia, with the highest flow rate, specifically this year 2020 has been 60,886,454 total traffic, 2. 36% less than last year, which despite having suffered this small decrease has been a fundamental tool to provide supplies.

On the other hand, at present, three container terminals operate in the port of Valencia:

- NOATUM-COSCO13
- MSCT / TIL
-TCV / APMTV

Its location in the port area is shown in the following illustration:

Assuming that the potential productivity that existing terminals can achieve increases (investments in new equipment, improved operating performance, etc.), it is estimated that the future capacity of these terminals will be 7.6 M TEU (year 2023).

In the following table, the expected utilization rates for 2023 are as follows:

Covid-19 won't stop us

Based on the fact that the operation of the ports has been of vital importance in tackling the COVID-19 crisis by providing us with supplies:

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has highlighted the strategy developed by Valenciaport from an operational, health, economic and social point of view to enhance the activity of the port community in order to minimise the impact of COVID-19 on its activity.

This strategy includes the following aspects:

1. Health operations and protocols:
  • The PAV distinguished between external and internal operations for which it drew up a contingency plan
  • In this, it differentiated between non-essential and essential workers, who were given a protocol with safety and health measures to continue operating
  • The use of personal protection equipment, the way of interacting with other workers and the disinfection of work areas were applied.
The United Nations agency also highlights the role of digitalization of the PAV thanks to tools such as ValenciaportPCS, which facilitate secure access to digital resources and information in real time to the port community operating in Valenciaport.

2. Facilitate liquidity for companies.

With regard to the economic impact of the pandemic, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development study indicates that VPA facilitated service providers and suppliers:
  • It allocated 7. 33 million euros to a total of 250 companies to provide liquidity to companies carrying out work for the ports of Gandía, Sagunto and Valencia
  • It advanced 2. 64 million euros in outstanding bonuses from 2019 to its customers and implemented the fee reduction.
  • The agility of the PAV in establishing internal mechanisms to issue invoices as quickly as possible.
3. The crisis as an opportunity:

The United Nations report points out some of the strategies to be prepared for new pandemics or problems related to climate change:
  • Digitalization
  • Innovation
  • Social responsibility
  • resilience
  • Recarbonization to achieve a more sustainable and inclusive development.
